Create printable word search puzzles in just a few steps.
Word Search Builder helps you turn your own list of words into a polished puzzle with a matching word bank and answer key. This guide walks you through the main features so you can build, preview, and save puzzles with confidence.
How to use Word Search Builder
1. Enter your puzzle title
Type a title in the Puzzle title field. This title appears on the worksheet and the answer key.
2. Add your word list
Paste or type one word or phrase per line in the Words box. Each line becomes an item in the puzzle.
- Use one entry per line.
- Phrases are allowed.
- Keep words clear and easy to read for your audience.
3. Choose the difficulty
Select Easy, Medium, or Hard to control how challenging the puzzle should feel.
- Easy is best for beginners or younger learners.
- Medium offers a balanced challenge.
- Hard allows more difficult placements.
4. Set the grid size
Leave Grid size on Auto if you want Word Search Builder to choose a size for you. If you already know the layout you want, select a specific grid size instead.
5. Choose allowed directions
Use the direction options to control how words can appear in the puzzle.
- Horizontal places words left to right.
- Vertical places words up and down.
- Diagonal adds diagonal words.
- Backwards allows words to run in reverse.
6. Set your page size
Enter the page width and height, then choose Portrait or Landscape. These settings shape the worksheet when you save or print it.
7. Generate the puzzle
Click Generate Puzzle to create the worksheet. The preview updates immediately so you can review the layout before saving.
8. Regenerate if needed
If you want a different arrangement with the same settings and word list, click Regenerate Layout.
9. Review the preview
Check the live preview on the right to see the puzzle grid and word bank. This is the easiest way to make sure the puzzle looks the way you want before saving it.
10. Save the worksheet and answer key
- Click Print / Save PDF to open the worksheet print view.
- Click Answer Key PDF to open the answer key version.
- In Chrome, choose Save as PDF if you want a PDF copy.
